Availability of bitumen tank and bitumen boilers allows to create and replenish own supply of bitumen, alleviating concerns over market fluctuations and supply irregularities, which may disrupt a number of processes. There are various specialized storage and heating tanks for such an important and complicated material as bitumen.

The main advantage of this product is that it can be used for bitumen storage as well as for bitumen heating. By installing a simple modification (additional heating tubes and burners) the stoage tank is converted into a boiler for bitumen, bitumen emulsions and their derivatives. The tank is built of 6 mm sheet metal and is coated with 150 mm of insulation.

The horizontal bitumen tank can be used by pavement production and repair companies, road construction, roofing and water proofing companies for collection and storage of bitumen-based binder, such as water-bitumen emulsions, polymer modified bitumen, diluted bitumens etc.

For instance, when the storage tank is equipped with burner and hearing tube, the burner can be fueled by gas, diesel fuel, heavy fuel oil etc. Oil heating can also be used. In this case oil is heated in a special boiler. Also, a stand alone heat generator can be employed; GlobeCore offers a 400 kcal generator for this purpose.

In a nutshell:

The bitumen tank have have a nominal volume of 30 cubic meters (28 – 30 depending on wether heating tubes have been installed).

The product is built in two design options:

1) with a heating tube and a burner (the burner can run on gas, diesel or HFO);

2) with oil heating. The oil is heated in a special boiler. The product can also be heated by GlobeCore’s MTG heat generator, which exceeds the heating capacity of competeing models.

The oil heated design is becoming more popular around the world. They are quite economical and relatively environmentally friendly.

In practivye, the use of oil heating for a bitumen boiler is better than a gas burner design. The advantage is in the gradual heating. In this case the temperature of the tubes does not exceed bitumen boiling temperature, which prevents overheating. Besidies, the heat generated by the oil generator, can be used to heat all of the bitumen storage facility, which is without a doubt quite an advantage as well.

Heating tubes with gas burners have a tendency to overheat bitumen, therefore constant control is necessary. Bitumen deteriorates when overheated and forms sediment on the bottom. Therefore, after several uses, bitumen must be drained from such unit and the unit must be cleaned. Despite the existing drawbacks, this type of storage tank is used by many facilities. The engineering department of GlobeCore constantly works to improve this technology to solve existing problems and implement modern designs and processes.

This being said, an oil heating tank offers a better method. The tank features agitators for stirring of the viscous material, while oil registers are installed in the bottom of the tank, which promote accelerated permeation of hot and cold layers of bitumen.

The unit can be quite large, so the design features two agitators.

A significant feature of the GlobeCore’s bitumen storage and heating tanks is the containerized design; the size of the container is similar to the size of a sea freight containers. This allows deliveries of the product by sea to anywhere in the world.

The unit is mobile, regardless of design options. When the unit with a gas burner and heating tube must be transported, the tube can be removed and placed inside special registers. To deploy the unit, the tube is reinstalled as per the requirements of the process and technical documentation.

The horizontal bitumen storage tank can also be equipped with a supply pump. This pump is also manufactured and can be purchased from GlobeCore.

Therefore, the customer can order and obtain a complete bitumen facility, fully tested and certified.

Besides, just one generator can heat an entire facility of 4 – 5 bitumen  tank, necessary for operation of a bitumen plant.

Most frequent questions:

1. Must the storage tank be constantly filled?

For each type of product, be it a burner equipped unit or oil heated unit, the answers are very different. The advantage of oil heating is that half or even all of bitumen can be filled or drained from the unit. The unit will remain in operating condition nonetheless. This is not the case with tanks equipped with heating tubes: bitumen level must never fall to expose the tubes. As soon as this happens, there is no way to reheat the bitumen, and the bitumen remaining on the tube will ignite, which obviously poses a serious fire hazard. To restore operation of the unit, new bitumen must be filled into the unit, which can then be heated and mixed with the remianing bitumen.

2. How is filling of bitumen controlled|?

Is there a safety system? The product features a certain sytem of special devices, including: level sensors (around the perimeter of the unit); temperature sensors; overflow sensors (at the top of the storage tank – required for increased precision of measurements). a redundancy level sensor and overflow pipe

3. How is the unit shipped?

The unit is shipped to the customer in partially disassembled form. With the first design option, gearboxers are shipped separately, with the second design option the burner is shipped separately. Besides, our engineers can visit the site and assemble the components. Access ladders are also removed for transportation.

4. How long is the warranty period?

Warranty extends to 12 months starting on the day of dispatch from supplier warehouse. The manufacturer guarantees normal and reliable operation of the unit providing that the customer observes the rules of installation, operation and maintenance set out in the unit’s manual.

5. How many operators are required to operate the product?

The manual states that the minimum recommended crew for operation of the product is two persons.

6. For how long can bitumen emulsion be stored in the storage tank?

While the emulsion is in the bitumen tank, heating and agitators must never be stopped. Bitumen can be stored inside the tank for as long as required by the process, then it should be pumped out.
